Statistics show that businesses that employ a fairly equal amount of men and women are 15% more successful than other companies in their field. Likewise, companies that hire employees of varying ethnicities outperform their competitors by 35%.
Why is this so? The common belief is that companies that are open to hiring many different types of people are also open to new ideas. Those ideas often lead to innovative ventures which earn the company success.
Susan McGalla, one of Pittsburgh’s finest executive consultants, is the former chief executive of Wet Seal and former president of American Eagle. She was born and raised in Liverpool, Ohio to a football coach dad. In her early years, McGalla graduated from Mount Union College with a degree in business and marketing. McGalla was raised in a family of boys and learned quickly that she would have to work for everything that she wanted. In her mind, the word “woman” did not mean “weaker sex.” She has proven that she is just as competent as her male counterparts by having taken many leadership positions. McGalla is proof that it is not who you know but what you know and who you are that makes the difference when climbing the corporate ladder.
